QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Housing Catherine McKenney (Ottawa Centre) released the following statement in response to the Ford government finally giving tenants the right to install air conditioners in their units starting July 1, years after the actual legislation, Bill 97, passed:
“The Ford government dragged its feet for years while Ontarians across the province endured three summers, and now a fourth, of extreme heat in their homes without the right to install air conditioners.
“As heat waves become increasingly dangerous, there is no reason or excuse for the delay in bringing this provision into effect.”
MPP McKenney has introduced legislation to protect tenants from extreme heat. Their Bill, Hot Days Cool Homes, would require landlords to have a maximum temperature during the summer months by adding cooling to the definition of a vital service under the Residential Tenancies Act.
“New Democrats have been calling to protect Ontarians from extreme heat for years. Instead of acting urgently, Ford waited while the provision collected dust and families dealt with sweltering heat. It’s time to do the right thing and pass Hot Days Cool Homes so tenants aren’t suffering this summer.”
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
