NDP: Bill 60 is an attack on renters, we need real rent control now

QUEEN’S PARK — The Ontario NDP are calling on the Ford government to protect Ontarians with real rent control now, as Bill 60 threatens them with higher rent and easier evictions:

“Doug Ford’s jobs disaster has given Ontarians enough to worry about,” said Marit Stiles, Leader of Ontario’s Official Opposition.

“Families are struggling to get by. Why on earth would the Premier go out of his way to make life even harder for the working people of this province?"

“Ford is the one who scrapped rent control in 2018 after saying he wouldn’t. Now, he wants to attack renters and make it easier for them to lose their homes,” said Shadow Housing Minister Catherine McKenney.

“Ontarians deserve to know that their government will be in their corner. They deserve real rent control now.”

“Ontario his dead last in home-building,” said Jessica Bell, Shadow Minister for Finance. “Housing has never been more expensive. Even renters lucky enough to find a place to live are forced to navigate a majorly backlogged Landlord Tenant Board system, unable to contend with the expensive legal teams of corporate landlords.

"In the face of all this, Ford decides to put more obstacles in front of Ontarians trying to get ahead. They deserve real rent control now.”
